After leaving Croatia (and a teeny bit of Slovenia), I was in Italy. The very edge of it, but Italy none-the-less, in Trieste.
Driving a car and trailer through the city was tricky, not knowing that my hotel was not drive up because it was in a pedestrian area was even more so, lol. Thankfully the gentleman at the front desk was very helpful and directed me, and then came to collect me when I walked to the entirely wrong place. It was a long day.
But I was in Italy, so I needed to eat the food. The first night I went for pizza. I checked several places and went with the highest rated one, but it seemed like you couldn’t really go wrong. There was a plastic chef outside the restaurant. Classic. I went with the pizza special of the day, and an app that I can only describe as a deep fried grilled cheese with mozz. It was tasty, as was the pizza. One of the servers loved my crystal necklace and so we got talking, and it turns out he is Canadian and was 3 years in Italy, but is thinking he might move on in the next year or so. I love talking to people about their travel journeys.

I stayed for 2 days there, both to give myself a small rest in between some long travel days, and because I was back in one of the first countries that I had ever travelled to for the first time in 25+ years. And I needed time to work on my website so that I can launch it soon.
The next day I realized that I was finally in a place with vintage stores, and I desperately needed a couple of new bags (and wouldn’t mind a new piece of clothing or 2. I have my whole wardrobe with me but most of it is not accessible and I am growing bored of wearing the same outfits. I scored a fantastic leather weekender bag, and found a dress in the same shop.
I was back at the hotel in time to get some work done and to catch up with people, then out to dinner. Second night – pasta. The place I had a reservation at was rated well, and their carbonara was specifically mentioned. And it was close. It was not as “old school” as I had been led to believe, but it actually turned out fabulous. It appeared to be an entirely fem-led staff, the carbonara was fabulous, as was the wine, and the sardines. There was a sign hanging that said “Witches Kitchen”, which does explain it.

I’m not sure what I was anticipating from an Italian city that is closer to the Slovenian capital than to its own major cities, but it was a very cool city. And it was nice to be back in Italy. And I am sure I will be back to the country much sooner than my last visit. So ciao for now.
